Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) Junior Music

NAFA Junior Music is the young-musicians department of the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, set up, the academy says, to discover young talents and nurture them to become the future musicians of Singapore. Professional training is provided for piano, violin, cello, flute, and Chinese instruments, and NAFA reports that hundreds of young musicians have benefited to date, with 100 percent achieving a distinction in ABRSM examinations and students and alumni winning more than 600 prizes across national and international competitions. Each semester mixes theory, aural, and music appreciation classes with individual practical lessons and studio classes, plus two masterclasses that give students stage experience and build performance confidence. Students sit internal and external examinations to monitor progress; Grade 8 and diploma students in piano, violin, cello, and flute can take ABRSM and Trinity exams, while Chinese instrument students sit graded examinations jointly conducted by NAFA and the Beijing Central Conservatory of Music, and students may also enter competitions as NAFA School of Young Talents representatives.
