T'ang Quartet

T'ang Quartet is not a music school at all, and this listing should be read as a performing ensemble rather than a place to book weekly lessons. Founded in 1992 by Ang Chek Meng, Ng Yu-Ying, Leslie Tan and Lionel Tan, it is Singapore's first professional string quartet, formed by four musicians who met through the Singapore Youth Orchestra and later played in the Singapore Symphony Orchestra. The quartet turned fully professional in 1999, after a residency at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University, and went on to perform at London's Wigmore Hall in 2005, release the debut album The Art of War the same year, and receive the Composers and Authors Society of Singapore Artistic Excellence Award (classical) in 2008. Its repertoire deliberately blends Eastern and Western influences, and its concerts aim to make classical chamber music feel accessible rather than formal. Alongside performing, the quartet mentors young musicians at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music and plays in schools in Singapore, Australia and the United States. The quartet's own site currently promotes concert programmes, including an evening at Victoria Concert Hall with piano collaborator Albert Tiu, with tickets sold through Sistic.
