The Singapore Chinese Opera Institute

The Singapore Chinese Opera Institute (新加坡戏曲学院) is devoted to Chinese opera, not to mainstream instrumental or vocal tuition. Its own site lists evening classes in movement (身段), basic skills (基本功), Huangmei opera singing and recitation (黄梅戏唱念), stage weaponry and props work (把子), and Chaozhou music on the erhu and yehu, with the listed sessions running Monday to Friday from 7pm to 9pm and places limited. Beyond classes, the institute has worked to support local opera research and development: in February 2014 it announced a Singapore Chinese Opera Research and Development Fund, which it reported had raised S$418,500, and it has hosted open days, book launches and festive gatherings for local opera groups. Its directory listing places it at 2 Allenby Road, #05-01, with telephone 6222 6551, a number that also appears on its own site. Because the visible news on its site dates to 2014, the current class timetable should be confirmed by phone before planning a visit; no fees, age ranges or present-day schedule could be verified from the pages read.
