Rubato Music is a modern music school offering flexible, creative music lessons in Singapore, located at Bras Basah Complex on Bain Street. Instead of grades, exams and a fixed curriculum, every lesson at Rubato is tailored to the student, and led by trained instructors with real-world gigging experience.
Lessons and programmes
Rubato teaches electric guitar, bass guitar, vocals, piano, saxophone, drums, ukulele, cajon and songwriting, plus music production. Lessons suit beginners through to advanced students, and students choose what they want to focus on rather than following a set syllabus.
- 1 to 1 lessons: personalised sessions with instructors chosen to match your genre, goals and personality.
- Band mentorship: 12 guided weekly sessions of 1.5 hours over 3 months, with fellow musicians matched by taste and playing level, ending in a final showcase performance.
- Workshops: a Music Theory Crash Course (12 sessions of 1.5 hours) and Music Production 101 (4 sessions of 1.5 hours, using GarageBand).
- Instrument servicing and repair: handled in-house by Doran, the school's instrument technician.

Founded by Grace Chng, Rubato describes itself as a "third space" music school where learning music should be an added joy rather than an added stressor. Progress is tracked with your instructor's feedback, your own goals, and a showcase held once or twice a year.
Lesson fees are set per instructor, reflecting each teacher's experience, performance background and years of teaching, so students can pick the instructor who suits them best. Students and teachers are also encouraged to jam and collaborate as part of the Rubato community.

No. Rubato is not a typical academy with strict levels, curriculum and exams. Lessons are personalised to each student, and instructors adapt their teaching to what the student wants to learn.
